The national final of Macra na Feirme’s variety entertainment contest, the FBD Capers Competition, took place in the Mountmellick Arts Centre, county Laois this past weekend, where Carrigaline Macra club from Seandun in county Cork beat off stiff competition from five other groups to emerge victorious on the night. The group from Carrigaline beat off 4 time winners Athboy Macra from county Meath, who came second on the night, Carrigaline Macra have now won 10 places on the Macra na Feirme prize-winner’s abroad this year. ‘Macra Capers’ is a competition designed for clubs wishing to gain experience in producing and performing a light entertainment variety show, with performances ranging from singing and dancing to comedy and drama. The winning show entitled ” ‘Happy days in Carrigaline’ was a mixture of dancing, live music and comedy. Speaking at the event, Catherine Buckley, national president of Macra na Feirme, commended all six groups on the talent and hard work which had brought them to the national final and thanked sponsors FBD for their continued support of the Macra Capers competition. Athboy Macra club from Co. Meath were runners-up in the competition with their show called “Showtime” while Bree Macra, from Wexford came in third place with a production entitled “Electric Dreams “. Best Producer went to Donal Crowley from Carrigaline while best male went to Joe Healy of Athboy with Cloiodhna Ni Dhushlaine from Athboy Macra winning best female on the night. Well done to all who participated.

Macra’s National Talent competition formerly Dublin City Talent is celebrating its 25th year this year. The National Talent Final is one of the showpiece occasions in the Macra. The Macra National talent competition is now one of the biggest and best established amateur talent competitions in the country. The National Final will take place, on May 3rd in the National Concert Hall Dublin after its time in Limerick last year. The Competition comprises eight entirely separate events covering the entertainment disciplines of Disco Dancing, Solo Instrumental Music, Novelty act, solo singing, mastermind, set dancing, comedy, and Pop / Folk / Ballad Group. Each of the eight events is a competition in its own right with eight separate winners at each stage of the competition; there is no overall winner. Over the 25 years one hundred and eighty different Macra branches spread across all twenty six counties have appeared in the National Final while eighty two different branches from twenty four counties have won national titles.  The winning Macra team will represent Limerick in the National Question Time. Congratulations to the winning Kilmallock team who will represent Limerick in the National Question Time Competition, later in the month. Well done to Aiden Gleeson, Pat O Neill, Daniel Casey and Billy Weeks

Limerick Macra are holding a special ceili to mark St. Patrick’s Day. It will in held on Friday 13th March at the GAA Hall Mungret.

Of course, everyone’s favourite ball will take place 12th April, Easter Sunday in
