Limerick has played a role with previous visits by U.S Presidents ,one cannot forget the memorable speech given the Mayor of Limerick Frances Condell with the visit of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1963.
Tourism flourished in Ireland as a result of JFK’S visit ,very appreciated revenue back then in the dark economic days of the 60’s and 70’s ,even to this day there are now many people on both sides of the Atlantic involved in searches for their own Irish Genealogy.
In 1970 President Richard Nixon visited Ireland ,I remember it well as there was great local excitement in the rural communities with the visit of Richard and Pat Nixon who stayed in Kilfrush House in Hospital ,Co.Limerick for one night during their three day stay.In Primary school i remember the teacher having us making US flags for the visit. Kilfrush House at the time was owned by the Irish Multi Millionaire John A Mulcahy.
Nixon is currently in the news with the release of the new movie Frost Nixon a must see movie ,of the famous interview by David Frost of Richard Nixon .
In 1998 President Bill Clinton visited Limerick and left an everlasting impression, security was tight in the city centre for his visit .I still cannot believe how i was allowed in with my Pentax K1000 and its telephoto lense ,it was well examined though by those security guys in the trenchcoats and the dark glasses. The Mayor of Limerick was Joe Harrington .Clinton’s legacy was his involvement in the Northern Ireland Peace process .
