Croom ,Limerick Macra News

winnersThe team from Killmallock Macra in county Limerick have been declared this year’s National Impromptu Debating champions. The final of the competition took place recently in the Rugby Club Nenagh in North Tipperary.

The winning team of Stephen Kelleher, Aisling Quain and Peter Cussen defeated Kaye Duffy, Thomas Duffy and Mary Owens from Ramor, Co. Cavan with their opposition of the motion that ‘”Public Servants should not have the right to strike”.

Macra national president Catherine Buckley paid tribute to the winners and runners-up on their eloquent oratory skills and said it had been an extremely enjoyable and informative debate.

Second Phase Club Officer Training:  Macra’s ‘second phase training’ will take place in January. This is a great opportunity for clubs to develop and set targets. This year, the programme is being expanded to include a Child Protection module. Training is an excellent opportunity to interact with members from surrounding Macra clubs and to review and enhance each club’s performance.  The details for training are as follows:

  • Saturday 24th January 2009 in the Glen Eagle Hotel, Killarney.
  • Registration from 1.30 to 2.00pm with training between 2 and 5.30pm
  • Cost – €180 per apartment – Clubs must book at least one apartment.
  • Contact Claire Davenport, in HQ (01-4268910) or cdavenport@macra.ie to book a place.

Young Farmers:  Michael Ryan (Limerick’s Training and Development Officer) and Lisa Cahill (Limerick’s National Council Representative) are encouraging Limerick’s young farmers to actively plan action against the Budget cuts to Installation Aid, Early Retirement Scheme and Disadvantaged Area Scheme.  A young farmers’ meeting will be arranged in January to put an action plan in place. We hope that our young farmers will collectively visit our local representatives to explain their cases.  Please contact Colm Quain, our Young Farmer Representative for further details.

  • You can help support our young farmers by signing the on-line petition to Budget Cuts on www.macra.ie.  This petition will be presented to an Taoiseach, Brian Cowen.

Well done to John Davern from Kilmallock who represented Limerick on Saturday in the National Welding Championships, sponsored by Griffin Welding & Engineering Supply Centre (Midleton, Co. Cork). The event took place in the FAS Centre in Bishopstown last week, with Seventeen competitors from Macra clubs all over the country battling it out for the prize of a welder, generously donated by the competition’s sponsors, as well as a place on the Macra prizewinners’ trip abroad later next year. The competition involved a written theory test followed by practical welding tasks. Ronan Kenneally, from Whitechurch, a member of Seandun Macra club in County Cork won the competition whilst Mark Forbes, from Dungourney a member of Ballynoe Macra club, also from county Cork was awarded the runner-up prize.
