Forage systems Maize and Wholecrop silage
The first year of the Forage systems Maize and Wholecrop silage competition was launched last week. The aim of this prestigious competition, run by Macra na Feirme and sponsored by Forage Systems, is to reward the best growers of Wholecrop & Maize and assist new and existing young farmers in achieving this standard. Entrants must be aged between 17 and 35 and be involved in the management and decision making of the crop sampled. 8 semi finalists will go forward for interview where they will be judged on a number of criteria such as harvesting decisions, pitting and feeding of the crop. Speaking at the launch, Catherine Buckley, Macra Na Feirme, national president, said in this era of high feed costs it’s vital that young farmers make the most cost efficient choices, and alternative forages such as maize and wholecrop are examples of these. The competition serves to highlight the benefits of these forages and assist farmers to produce crops of the highest standards. Jim Buckley, Director of FK Forage Systems said we are delighted to work with Macra’s young farmers and to sponsor this competition as it rewards young farmers for their dedication to achieving the highest standards in crop production. The overall winner will be announced in January and will win a study trip to China visiting starch plants, sugar beet factories and a selection of dairy and beef farms.
