Galtee Mountains Climb, Summit Achieved by Ballylanders Macra

Ballylanders Macra members and Friends who took part in a sponsored climb of the Galtees on Sunday 11th May in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The Galtee climb was a great success on Sunday 11th May. Theere was a lot of money was raised for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and congratulations to everyone who took part in the walk and the avid organisers of the Ballylanders Macra Club.

Macra Clubs are busy training for the tag rugby season ahead this summer. All 5 Macra teams participated in the Bruff tournament every Thursday evening over the last 6 weeks. This league came to a conclusion last Thursday and the infamous Old Crescent competition commences this week. Macra Clubs will compete in the Friday night s league. The best of luck to each team and it promises to be an enjoyable and sociable summer ahead. The new Macra na Feirme national executive was elected at the National AGM, which was held in the Dolmen Hotel in Carlow recently. Michael Gowing from Laois has been re-elected National Chairman, with Anita Meagher from Waterford being re-elected National Secretary and Dara Kavanagh from Wicklow taking up the role of National Treasurer. The newly elected National Council for the 2008/2010 term was inaugurated at the AGM. Chairpersons and members of Macra’s three sub-committees – Agricultural Affairs; Rural Affairs and Member Services and Competitions – will be elected at the next national council meeting. Macra na Feirme’s New Executive is made up of the following members; Frank O Mahony, Flor O’Gorman, Kieran O’Dowd, Ronan Feighery, Thomas Quirke, Michael Gowing, Denis Drennan, Eddie O’Donnell, Michael Manley, Sylvie Mehigan, Catherine Buckley, President and Anita Meagher and Dara Kavanagh.

Macra na Feirme extends congratulations to Brendan Smith the newly appointed Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food. Macra would also like to wish Minister Mary Coughlan the best of luck in her new post as Tainaiste and Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment. Macra warned Brendan Smith that the task ahead as Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food will have immediate challenges such as WTO and the CAP health check, farm waste management scheme along with young farmer specific issues such as the reintroduction and the continual supports and incentives to young farmers to readdress the age profile in agriculture.

Tina Fitzgerald of the Shannonside Macra Club is busy preparing for the Miss Blue Jeans Country Queen Festival taking place in Athboy, Co. Meath on the June Bank Holiday weekend. She will represent Limerick in the prestigious festival. Up to 30 girls will take part in this year s Miss Blue Jeans Festival from almost every county in Ireland. There will be much to do over the weekend including strutting on the catwalk, where girls must model two outfits, one denim outfit and another of their choice.

22/May /2008 – Avondhu Macra host Sweepstakes Avondhu Macra will be holding a sweepstakes in Curaheen Park Greyhound Stadium, on Thursday May 22nd.
