Macra na Feirme extends congratulations to Brendan Smith the newly appointed Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food. Macra would also like to wish Minister Mary Coughlan the best of luck in her new post as Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment. Macra warn Brendan Smyth that the task ahead as Minister for Agriculture Fisheriesmacra-limerick.gif and Food will have immediate challenges such as WTO and the CAP health check, farm waste management scheme along with young farmer specific issues such as the reintroduction and the continual Supports and incentives to young farmers to readdress the age profile in agriculture.


The National AGM of Macra Na Feirme was held in the Dolmin Hotel in Carlow on Saturday May 10th 2008. Carlow had the honour of hosting the event this year. It was a great AGM with an action packed schedule of events taking place. On Saturday evening the National Final of the Debating Competition proudly sponsored by the National Forum on Europe took place. After a closely-fought war of words at this year’s final of the Macra na Feirme Debating Competition kindly sponsored by the National Forum On Europe, the Carrigaline team from Seandun were declared the 2008 champions. The finalists debated the Macra na Feirme motion That accession to the EU continues to be a step forward for the Irish people. The competition took place at the annual Macra AGM in Carlow last weekend. The team of Alan Jagoe, Gavin Howe, Frank O’Mahony and Tim Lombard have now won four places on the Macra prize-winners’ trip to Germany later this year as part of their prize. Macra president Catherine Buckley paid tribute to both the Carrigaline team and their opponents Mark Connors, Evan Stanley, Ann Kelly and Aoife Connors from Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford on their eloquent oratory skills and congratulated Evan Stanley from Kilmacthomas who was awarded Best Speaker on the night.
