Limerick Macra News

Posted by croom on October 7, 2008

We are currently in the middle of the Macra na Feirme Recruitment Fortnight. The focus of the fortnight is ‘promoting Macra’s six key areas of activity: sport, travel, agriculture, public speaking, community involvement and performing arts’. Macra na Feirme national president Catherine Buckley explains why Macra runs this Recruitment Fortnight. ‘New members are the lifeblood of every organisation. They bring new ideas, increase the organisation’s person power, foster growth, prevent member burn-out, and take over leadership roles when other members leave. Macra’s most valuable resource is its members, and it is up to current members to ensure that there is always a steady flow of new talent into the organisation. ‘Many young people may not actually be aware of the broad and varied programme of activities that Macra na Feirme offers members so we want to highlight the fact that the benefits of membership are enormous in terms of personal development. We have members from all walks of life, with different interests and occupations, and our programme of activities reflects this fact,’ said Ms. Buckley. Ms Buckley also points out that while the campaign is being run on a national basis, individual Macra clubs around the country are currently organising events to attract potential new members. ‘Macra clubs in every county in Ireland will be running special events to attract along people who ordinarily would never have thought about the benefits of becoming a member of a local Macra club. Macra has something to offer everyone and that’s the message we’re trying to get out,’ she concluded. To see what Macra is hosting in your area visit www.macra.ie

Limerick Macra hosted the fabulous National MacraVision finals last Saturday night in the South Court Hotel, Raheen. The standard of singing and dancing on the night was extremely high with some entertaining impressions and songs from famous singers like Elvis, Tina Turner and Celine Dion. Best solo performance went to Carlow Macra with Meath coming a close second. Best groups act went to the Berrings Club from Cork who sang the Foundations song ‘Build me up Buttercup’ and the newly formed Limerick Club, Croom took a well deserved second place in the group competition. The Croom club sang Elvis’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’ with lead vocals by Shane Cahill and the backing dancers were Steven Fitzgerald, Lisa Cahill, Sinead Leahy and Patricia Cahill. This group also won the ‘Best Costume’ award. Congratulations to the organisers of the event, the supporters and of course the participants who entertained us.

Newport Macra held a ‘Rose of the Harvest’ festival last Sunday in conjunction with the annual threshing day. They were very lucky with the weather and all the roses enjoyed team building activities during the day, including sumo wrestling. Mary McCabe who originally hails from Newport and is a member of Ballylanders Macra won third place and took home a generous prise sponsored by a local hair dresser. Well done Mary.

Limerick Macra News

Posted by croom on October 2, 2008

Limerick has a new Macra Club, based around the Croom, Ballingarry area. The Maigueside Club has had one meeting and a social event and already 20 new, young enthusiastic members have signed up. The ages range from 19 to 30. Last Wednesday, the club organised a bowling night in Limerick and it was an excellent chance for members to get to know each other. It was also an excellent opportunity for people to come along and see what Macra is all about – fun, socialising and trying out something new (which might be bowling or drama or volleyball etc). Monday evenings have being scheduled as a weekly sports evening with the use of the Community Hall in Croom from half 7 to half 8. Everyone is welcome to join in. Congratuations to the newly appointed officers for the club, the chairperson Seamus O Connell, treasurer Steven Fitzgerald, secretary Shane Cahill and the energetic PRO Aoife Leahy. Good luck to everyone.
