Forage systems Maize and Wholecrop silage

Posted by croom on July 15, 2008

The first year of the Forage systems Maize and Wholecrop silage competition was launched last week. The aim of this prestigious competition, run by Macra na Feirme and sponsored by Forage Systems, is to reward the best growers of Wholecrop & Maize and assist new and existing young farmers in achieving this standard. Entrants must be aged between 17 and 35 and be involved in the management and decision making of the crop sampled. 8 semi finalists will go forward for interview where they will be judged on a number of criteria such as harvesting decisions, pitting and feeding of the crop. Speaking at the launch, Catherine Buckley, Macra Na Feirme, national president, said in this era of high feed costs it’s vital that young farmers make the most cost efficient choices, and alternative forages such as maize and wholecrop are examples of these. The competition serves to highlight the benefits of these forages and assist farmers to produce crops of the highest standards. Jim Buckley, Director of FK Forage Systems said we are delighted to work with Macra’s young farmers and to sponsor this competition as it rewards young farmers for their dedication to achieving the highest standards in crop production. The overall winner will be announced in January and will win a study trip to China visiting starch plants, sugar beet factories and a selection of dairy and beef farms. For more information please contact Derry Dillon in Macra Na Feirme national office on 01 4268904.

Limerick s Know Your Neighbour Weekend

Posted by croom on July 15, 2008

Limerick s Know Your Neighbour Weekend got off to a great start on Friday night with a Community  Dance Event in Croom which went down very well by all those who attended .The weekend continued with people from around Limerick making an effort to meet familiar and unfamiliar neighbours. National awareness was built up prior to this event with advertisements on the national and local radio stations and articles in all papers. Limerick Macra rounded off the weekend with an enjoyable mini golf session for families and friends in the Unigolf complex in Limerick on Sunday followed by a BBQ in the Locke Bar. It  is hoped that this awareness and sense of community will continue from this weekend throughout the rest of the summer and the year to follow. Our communities are very important to us and the support, friendliness and general kindness we show to each other can contribute to a greater quality of life for each and everyone of us.
