Paul O Connell Croom Connection for Munster

Posted by croom on May 21, 2008

Paul O Connell Munster

This weekend the Maigueside and the Croom District will have a major interest in the Heineken European Rugby Final, it will be a proud day for the Quilty family Donoman when their nephew Paul O Connell will be leading the Munster Squad on the grounds of the Cardiff Arms Park  hoping for a Munster win over Toulouse . Paul O Connell is the son of Shelia Quilty a daughter of the John Joe and Moira Qulity and sister of the Quilty brothers Sean,Donie,Bobby,Patsy,Martin ,Tom ,Carmel ,the Quilty’s were an outstanding sporting family  and many might say where the sportsmanship might have come from ,

Sean the eldest of the Quilty family donned the colours with Croom Gaa in the 60’s and would have played both hurling and football with his native Croom.Sean was based as a Lieutenant  and Captain in the Irish army at the army barracks at Letterkenny in Co.Donegal .Sean would travel the 500 mile round trip to wear the Croom jersey either in hurling or football on a Sunday Afternoon, with no showering facilities available where they would have to dress and undress under the shelter of the whitethorn bushes or the evergreen trees .Following either a victory or a defeat  Sean would immediately return to his army base in Donegal. It wasn’t in the era of the mileage allowance, it was the period of Sporting dedication .

This weekend we will see that sporting feature emerge when we will  see Paul O Connell the captain of the sporting Munster side taking the field on television, and what an honour for the O’Connells and the Quilty Family, and hopefully Paul will be receiving the cup that will crown them the champions of Europe .

CROOM/CORK ROAD SCHEME

Posted by croom on May 21, 2008

The Croom /Blarney proposed road development and design team are now planning the Croom/Cork road development plan.  The scheme involves 37 Km of Dual Carriageway including Bypasses of Buttevant and Charleville extending from North of Newtwopothouse and the Southern end of the Croom Bypass linking with Patrickswell.  The forty strong engineering team with its headquarters in Mallow are busy formulating the preliminary design for one of the largest road developments ever undertaken in the South of Ireland.  Hopefully the design team will take into account the serious road crossings at Anhid Cross in the construction of the Croom Bypass.  The crossing to the Granagh road is unlit during the winter months and dark evenings.  The turn off point for Granagh is poorly marked and signed and hopefully that this dangerous stretch of he Cork/Limerick road will receive immediate attention and ensure safety for drivers who frequent this daily.

HISTORY OF BANOGUE

Posted by croom on May 21, 2008

The small parish of Banogue are initiating the publication on the history of Banogue
And a meeting of past pupils of Banogue will be held in Banogue School on this Thursday evening 22nd May at 8.00 p.m. with a view to writing a book on the history of Banogue.  Anybody who feels that they would have an input are all welcome to attend. Banogue is a great historic Parish.  It is one of the smallest parishes in the county and great credit is due to those parishioners who intend to take up the pen and document the historic events of the happenings of the Maigueside parish.  The old parish took in Ballybanogue, Croom, Dullas in the nineteenth century.  Famous names came from the parish and the parish had two former County Chairmen and county Secretaries of the GAA County Board the late Jackie O’Connell and the late Jimmy Hickey.

The Maigueside was a showcase on the world sporting stage last week when the Irish Open Golf Championship was held on the banks of the Maigue at Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort. The Maigueside District is a historic area with its castles manors and mills ,and on Sunday evening last the world media broadcast and televised Richard Finch taking an early summer dip coming to the 18th hole when he stumbled taking his final shots on his way to victory, the Maigue may be well known for its Salmon fishing in the past but last Sunday evening’s event seen by millions of people watching the Irish Open in Adare  ,all the tourist promotions could not buy this exposure and the river Maigue is now on the world stage as a place to visit .Who knows with a half a million Crooms in family names and districts in the  United States they may like to see the River Maigue following last weekends exposure.

Richard Finch ,The winner been pursued by a section from the large crowd who attended the Irish Open Golf Championship in Adare last weekend .

Limerick 2008 International BBQ

Posted by croom on May 21, 2008

Video :Limerick 2008 International BBQ Cook off Video 2

Limerick International BBQ 2008Limerick’s world of food International BBQ Cook off.Day 1 Video No 1 of 4.
The Irish Barbecue Associations annual Complete Cuisine World of Food is now in its fifth year and this one has to be best ever I have been to. This year the weather obliged with temperatures reaching 25 degrees and even more in the BBQ area of Howleys Key in Limerick with the backdrop of the historic St.Mary’s Cathedral and the majestic River Shannon .Last year I failed miserably to capture the occasion on video with the inclement weather and ended up constantly wiping the drops of rain from the lens, (a nightmare for a video/camera enthusiast). The sun duly obliged this time.

This event is fast becoming a must go to event on the social calendar for Limerick and the Mid West Region. Since it’s inception five years ago founded by Pat O Sullivan Chairman of the Irish BBQ Association it has grown in status. It is now acknowledged as the worlds largest international BBQ Competition.

The winners for Saturday included the Limerick Filipino Community for the Salmon and hygiene category, Limerick City Fire Brigade in the Chicken, lamb category winner was The Thai Gourmet Chef representing Thailand, and Jonathan Philips from the Limerick Institute of Technology won the award for the best sauce. The Congo team won first place in the chicken .Transylvania won the first place award for best costume and the Congo for the happy home. The buzz and the excitement for Saturday was incredible the different musical sounds from the African Conga Drums, The Brazilian Samba sounds and accompanying dancers , to the English Team accompanied with their IPOD and speakers playing the sounds of the Kinks “Waterloo Sunset”. To witness the different culinary skills was a joy to behold; tips were picked up along the way to use at home. BBQ is now on the up and up in almost every household now in Ireland something that was non existent a decade ago, the evidence of this can be seen from all the BBQ units for sale in the different retail outlets.

Sunday’s event was the chef’s challenge and this is a serious competition with some of the leading chefs involved so much so that the Michelin Star Chefs participated. The sight of a full pig on spit barbecued caught my eye on the day so much so that I could resist to sample and was not let down. The taste was exquisite, it had been cooking since 6 am that morning,The Swiss team surrounded with their display of fresh lavender in pots was eye catching .It was busy busy with each team giving their all to try and win the coveted weekend prize. Some of the displays I saw were brilliant tough call on the judges to decide the winners. Patrick Punches Hotel/ Edward Blackwell won the fish prize category, The Azur Café and Kenneth Stembridge the 2nd in the Chicken and 3Rd in the Pork Ribs, Tom Flavin for the Hilton Hotel won the best Fish Dish. The Polish team showed their delight in dancing raising their large Red and White flag in celebration ,the team from the Congo danced with delight all the way to the stage and on it also on winning, from the home of Barbecuing the USA was well represented on the winning podium ,the star spangled banner could be seen on the top of the caps of the team from Texas making their victorious walk to the stein the fish category the Tennessee chefs were victorious .One of the organisers of the World Famous Jack Daniels Lynchburg Invitational BBQ in Tennessee has offered to bring over 40 teams from all over the world to Limerick next year to raise the bar and make it even bigger. Roll on next year I say.
