Down Memory Lane

The Town Hall Ballroom 50 years ago would have celebrated its 21St Birthday Dance on the 21St of February 1958,the town hall ballroom was built in 1937 .The top names from the Showband era performed on the town hall stage ,The Dixielanders who’s musician passed away recently Brendan O Brien ,Donie Collins was one of the favourite bands in the Sixties, Paul Goldin also passed away some weeks ago .The weekly Sunday Night films was a major attraction to both young and old Vic Loving and Danny  Kaye would stage a month long variety show with many of the popular shows from the era “Murder in the Redbarn” was a sellout .

ALISON LALOR (NEE KNOWLES)

The tragic death of Alison Lalor (nee Knowles) died last weekend on the Naas Road at Naas following a car accident.  Alison was daughter of the late Frederick and Vera Knowles former Church of Ireland Rector of Croom, she was a lay reader at the Church of Ireland, Rathgar, Dublin.  The Rev. Knowles resided at Gurrane House which later became the doctor’s residence.  The Rev. Knowles moved to the Curragh in the mid 50s following the death of his Wife Vera and became attached as Rector to the Army Barracks in the Curragh.  At going to press no arrangements have been made with regards to the funeral of the late Alison Lalor.  The Maigueside district sympathise with the Lalor and Knowles family. Mrs. Knowles is the sister of the Rev. Philip Knowles who is the Dean of Cashel.

The death also took place recently in England of Maurice Begley, brother of Mrs. Eileen Hartigan, Towerfield.

Niamh Mulcahy Young Camogie Player Ireland 2007

 What a year it has been for Limerick Hurling, Niamh Mulcahy was recently awarded the Ireland Young Player of the Year in Camogie for 2007, all the more remarkable the achievement considering Limerick recently won the Gala All Ireland Final which is a B Grade in Camogie.Limerick will now be competing at the top level coming up against Cork, Wexford Tipperary etc.next year.

Niamh comes from a very sporting background, her father Ger Mulcahy played for Dromin-Athlacca, Ahane and Limerick for years. When I was speaking with him, he said he was very proud of his daughter’s achievements.

WEDDING

The wedding took place at St. Joseph’s Church, Castleconnell, of Helen O’Sullivan daughter of Michael & Claire O’Sullivan, Newport, Co. Tipperary, and Paul O’Donovan son of Vincent and Sheila O’Donovan of Tullovin.  Chief Bridesmaid Angela O’Sullivan, Bridesmaid Emer O’Donovan. Bestman Patrick O’Donovan. Groomsman Liam O’Donovan. Reader Kevin O’Donovan. Celebrants, Fr. Brendan Kyne P.P. Castleconnell and Fr. Joseph Kennedy, P.P. Croom.  Reception was held at Oakwood House Hotel, Shannon.

CROOM COMMUNITY GAMES

Croom community athletic games will take place this Thursday 1st May 2008 in the G.A.A. field. Registration at 6.00 p.m and the fee is €2.00.  All children from Croom, Banogue and Manister are welcome. It is very important that young children become involved in all types of sport and the community games association has been the starting point for many a successful sports person and hopefully those taking part in this event will reach the national finals.

WALKING CLUB MARATHON

Croom Walking club have been preparing for the past few weeks for the forthcoming marathon and half marathon will start from the old Maple Ballroom Kilfinane on this Sunday the 26 mile marathon registration will commence at 8.00a.m. The marathon proper will commence at 9.00 a.m. and the mini marathon registration will take place at 9.00 a.m. and the mini marathon will start at 10.00 a.m.  Senior members of the Croom club travelled the senior route and intermediate members completed the Seefin hill route.  The heavy downfalls of rain slowed the final stages of Sunday’s journey but all the members of the walking club are fighting fit and see no problem in completing this walking festival this weekend.

Croom Communion.

The First Holy Communion for boys and girls from St. Mary’s National School, Croom will take place on Saturday the 10th of May at St.Mary’s Church ,Croom.Mr.Murphy has prepared the young children for their big day and Fr.Joe Kennedy will officiate .Fr.Joe has assited  in the church ceremonies over the past few months with the preparation of the children who will be receiving their First Holy Communion.
